Already in pain from the beatings, the mockery, the loneliness, Jesus is forced to carry the beam on which he will die. Psychological torture added to physical abuse.
The beam would be heavy and rough. Difficult to manoeuvre – especially in narrow, crowded streets.
The soldiers would need to clear a path – not with polite requests. They would have pushed and shouted, lashed out at the crowds and Jesus. The crowds would respond with insults – some for the Roman soldiers, some for Jesus.
And Jesus? Throughout the journey the pain would have intensified as he struggled under the weight of his burden – physical and spiritual. No doubt he’d slip and stumble, stagger and lose his grip. Each step bringing new agonies as the journey went on and on and on.
When would it end?
