Following yesterday’s entry I was delighted to find this quotation over at execupundit:
A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine.
Murphy’s Law of Computing
While it may be Murphy’s Law of Computing, it’s also an apt descriptor or definition for most bureaucracies that I’ve come across… and the complexity is needed to compensate for incompetence and lack of discipline (per Jim Collins).
Therefore, the leadership challenge is to develop competence, encourage discipline and rigorously simplify the systems.
